GIVC Start Tournament Season with a win
The first of the summer tournaments took place in Wimbledon this weekend. GIVC were represented by 2 teams in this 4 a side competition.
Both teams made it through the mornings pools in good form and both teams were placed in the top pool in the afternoon.
Clive, Danai, Nick and Dave were given a slightly higher handicap than the team consisting of NVL players Michael, Lukass, Tabea and Claire. The handicapping meant that when the two teams met in the final pool the scores were all level when the 15 minute time limit expired. This put all the pressure on server Clive, knowing that winning the point would mean a chance at a medal he promptly served into the net and gave the match to the other GIVC team. This team then won their final match and secured their first haul of trophies for the season.
Next tournament will be Ashcombe on 28th July. Currently we have 2 teams formed but it is not too late to make some more, just let the coach know at training if you would like to play.

Top of the table in Bath!
A great weekend in Bath culminated in the Men's team winning the final in Division 2. After having only lost one of their matches on Saturday the men qualified for the semi finals of their division on Sunday. They cruised through this match which then matched them up with White Eagles, the team they lost to on Saturday.
White Eagles obviously relaxed a bit to much, thinking the result would be much the same on Sunday. This meant that Guildford were able to shock them by taking early lead in first set. The opposition fought back but to no avail and Guildford won 25-14. The second set saw White Eagles pull out all the stops and come out winners 25-22. A deciding set was now required and both teams were now at maximum effort, but Guildford had the edge with their superior blocking. It was all square at 12-12 but then Guildford summoned up their last reserves of energy and took the final three points winning 15-12. Later the team were presented with their Winners Medals by the Major of Bath.
"Swing your arms like me" the second Guildford team did not fair as well. Hit by some last minute withdrawals they had to field a makeshift team which led to some confusion between their players and a lot of lost points. Despite pushing some teams hard they were sadly unable to win any matches throughout the weekend.

Epsom Tournament, another win...
Due to the poor weather this weekend the competition at Epsom Tournament had to be moved indoors. This allowed the guildford team to use all its skills without the hinderence of the wind.
In the open competition in the morning the team were placed second after unexpectedly losing a match due to some sudden rule changes...
After a lunch break the team were determined to put right the injustice of the morning so playing in the top pool they made sure they won all their matches and took home the prizes.
Next week the same team will be hoping to maintain their winning streak at the East Hants Volleyball Picnic.

GIVC teams brought a large collection of medals back from the Ashcombe tournament this weekend. The Mixed division 2 team were runners up in their division and the mens team of Borek, Mike, Darren, Josh, Gus and Phil were victorious in Mens Division 1. The mens team were particularly happy to win as this marked Borek's last competitive outing for the club before returning to Czech after 4 years of playing volleyball with GIVC.
Next tournament on the Calendar for GIVC is Epsom, it is not too late to enter so if you are interested get in touch with Clive Cooper or Nick Flowers.
