Surrey League Champions ...

Guildford Mistral have run out Champions of the Surrey Volleyball Association for the 2004/5 season.

The Spectrum based side pipped fellow contenders British Airways to the title by the narrowest of margins. Both teams shared the same number of league points and set differences so it all came down to a total match points difference of just 44!

Last season the side finished in the runners-up position after failing to overhaul a strong Ashcombe side. This years elevation to Champions is a result of Guildford International's continued development of it's Womens section within the club.

Mistral Win Tournament ...

Guildford have been as busy as ever with 3 of the clubs coaches taking the opportunity participate in a Level 2 coaching course in Dorking & the Surrey League Womens team, Guildford Mistral, taking part in a 6 team Tri-County Invitational Tournament at The American Community School in Cobham.

Guildford have been building closer links with The American Community School since they started using their impressive sports hall for home National League fixtures in 2003. In recent weeks this has included running joint training sessions with their Varsity Girls team.

Therefore it was fitting that the opening match of the tournament should see Guildford Mistral taking on the school's side. Guildford started strongly with setter Claire Bourgouin's powerfull serve causing all sorts of problems for the youngsters. To their credit after the initial shock of going well behind, after a time out they found their stride & began to match Guildford point for point. But the size of the gap proved to be too great to bridge. The second set was closer but Guildford were always in control.

With the tournament format being 2 pools of 3 teams Guildford had back to back matches & then had to take on Maidenhead from the Berkshire League. Two evenly matched teams there was nothing between them as there shared a set each, but it was Guildford who were able to make minor tactical adjustments in the deciding 3rd set to pull out a comfortable buffer which they managed to hold onto to secure a semi final place.

The match to decide the second semi finalists from the pool produced something of a shock as the home based school team produced some inspired volleyball to take the first set against Maidenhead, then with an enthuastic group of supporters they took early control of the second set & dispite a scare as victory was in sight they managed to hold on for a memorable vistory.

Guildford's semi-final was against Epsom was rather one-sided with Guildford's power proving to be decisive & it was only when Guildford impatience to kill the ball caused a string of errors that Epsom threatened to come close.

Guildford knew that they would be in for a tough final against Surrey League rivals British Airways Jetset, both teams were evenly matched with a solid service recieve & resolute defence. BA took the first set by the narrowest of margins, but Guildford fought back to level the scores with some spectacular pick ups & intelligent variations of attack.

Guildford took an early lead in the final set which they never surrendered with the backcourt hitting of Ivana Butanova Van-Hengle opening up the court, but it was a magnificant team effort to win the tournament. With the ACS team making a highest ever 4th place it was a successfull day for the hosts as well as they prepare of an International Tournament in Rotterdam.
