Guilford Storm Beat Friends Provident ...

Guildford Storm opened their season with a fine win over Friends Provident today at the ACS.

The Guildford side struggled last season but looked to be bright for the new season as they took the first set. However, the visitors managed to get back into the match by winning the 2nd set.

Storm responded by stealing the 3rd but it looked like Friends Provident would force the game into a deciding fifth set as they managed to peg Guildford back and actually managed to equal the scores at 23-23.

However, they managed to keep their composure and see out the 4th set to take the match 3-1 and send the watching Guildford supporters wild.

Storm Beaten By Friends Provident ...

A new look Guildford Storm started the season with a trip to Dorking to take on Friends Provident yesterday.

The team were ready willing and surprisingly able, despite their new formation.

That said, the first set didn't go their way, with solid performances from an opposition who've been playing together for what could be decades. They lost out 25-18 against but with plenty of rallies which were closer-fought than the score may suggest.

Sadly the 2nd set didn't appear to be much of a build on the first, with a resounding defeat 25-11. However, a tiring opposition, consistent serving and the all-new Storm solid block proved the Guildford sides saviour and with the 3rd set heading their way they finished off 25-19.

The newly sprung confidence continued to the 4th set, with some solid hitting all round which enabled them to take it 25-17.

In the final set a quick run of points saw FP take the lead through some powerful hits by Andy Rafferty. Storm rallied, but couldn't quite squeeze back to the lead and finished a close 2nd at 15-11.

All in all a respectful performance for their first outing of the season with nearly 2 hours of game time and as ever a friendly-spirited 5 setter.

The cheap bar helped the team console their marginal defeat ...

Friends Provident Tame The Storm ...

Guildford Storm began their new season last night with a short trip along the A25 to Dorking to take on Friends Provident.

This would be the teams first match and would mark their return to Surrey League Division 2 after running out Champions of Division 3 last season.

Storm started brightly by winning the first two sets but the timely introduction of Friends Provident's start player meant that the home team went on to win the third and fourth sets to force a deciding fifth set and then went on to clinch the fifth leaving Guildford Storm wondering what could have been ....

The teams next match is away to Chessington on the 28th November.
