Tsunami Take Care Of British Airways …

Guildford poured early season misery on the current league champions when they saw them off in a five set match at the ACS today.

Tsunami are in of state if flux and with many players out injured Borek Cernich, Mike Richardson, Darren Heath and John Biddiscombe were joined by Mucius Ruffman, Phil Claire and Tony Bradstock playing up from the Club’s Division 2 team.

BA won the first set but then lost the 2nd two. Guildford were well placed to finish it off in the 4th set but could not maintain their discipline and allowed an excitable BA team to force the game into a 5th set.

However, a good start by Guildford frayed the visitors nerves and it was Tsunami who ran out easy winners on the back of a mistake ridden BA final set.

Preview : Guildford Tsunami v British Airways …

Tsunami kick off the season with a home match against the current League Champions this Sunday at the American Community

Although it looks like a tall order it’s interesting to note that Tsunami did not lose to the Champions last season at all.

In fact BA victories over Guildford are rare. The home side will be looking to keep up this good record.

Tsunami win in 5 set thriller

Guildford Tsunami maintained their 100% record with a 3-2 victory away to Wimbledon.

The team welcomed back setter Matt Neilson for his first match since a knee injury struck in April but were without youngsters Ross Pickens & Ethan Jacobs who were playing for their schools in Europe.

The team were in generous mood as they seemed determined to gift their hosts at least 5 points at the start of each set & even when not through their play they then managed to give away a rotation fault.

At 2-1 up Guildford relaxed too much & let Wimbledon level the scores. But it was a determined Guildford side that went into the deciding set - the sprint to 15 points. As with most sprints it is the ones that start fastest that usually win & Guildford made no mistake to clince a well fought match.

Tsumani Tidy Up At Epsom ...

Guildford Tsunami broke Epsom hearts today with a fine win at the Epsom College. Epsom started brightly and made most of the running in the 1st set against a new look Guildord side that for this season is relying less and less on players drawn from the Club's NVL teams.

Epsom took the 1st set narrowly but it was not long before returning setter Mike Richardson start to link with power hitter Ian Millar and Ethan Jacobs who began to score freely through the outside, ably supported by Rudolph Popovsky's and Mucious Ruffman's blocking in the middle.

Guildford took the next 2 sets and it was left for Panos Saragiotis to serve out the 4 and final set to finish the match with a blistering jump serve ace.

Guildford open with a Win ...

Guildford started off their 2005 - 06 season with an away win at newly promoted KS Odra in South West London.

Despite a minimal warm-up due to traffic hold ups before they could even leave Guildford, the team started strongly taking the first set 25-11. A more evenly balanced 2nd set saw the home side fight back as Guildford struggled to control the tempo of the match & were eventually relieved to win the set 25-21.

A change in starting positions provided a better blocking match up on the KS Odra hitters & despite a slight wobble with victory in sight Guildford held on for another 25-21 win.

Next match is on November 6th against Epsom.

Guildford are Runners-Up ...

Tsunami managed a creditable 2nd place in the 1st Division of the Surrey Volleyball Association. They finished behind British Airways who managed to remain unbeaten for the entire season.

The Guildford side suffered it's worst start to the season in recent memory when they lost three out of their first four matches mainly due to a lack of players interested within the club to play at this level.

However, over time a core of players came togethor to provide stability and the side only lost once in the remaining season.

The make up of the squad allowed Guildford to field to non-NVL players in it's top Surrey League side for the 1st time in 15 years. This saw Rudolf Popovsky and Ethan Jacobs improve dramatically over the course of the season.

Tsunami Washed Out ...

Guildford down Epsom Eagles ...

Tsunami kicked off the new season with a protracted win against newly promoted Epsom at Epsom College on Sunday night. Although reigning Surrey League Champions the side has been hit with a massive amount of player departures with Christophe Juvanon, James Dickerson, Matt Neilson and Darren Heath all calling time on their Surrey League commitments for the time being. Coupled with this the continued injury to Jake Zimmerman and the absence of Borek Cernich meant that it was a disparate group of players who took to the court to represent the team whose goal this season will be consolidate for future seasons and give experience to promising club players.

NVL Division 2 players Ralph Kernchen and Alex Chevau joined Mike Richardson along with the Division 3 team's John Biddiscombe, Panos Saragiotis and Darren Heath who was making a temporary return to Tsunami.

Guildford cruised into an early lead in the first set but Epsom who were playing their first match in top Surrey division who definitely 'up for it' as they fought back to take the first set. The pattern of play was to be reproduced throughout the match but it was an increasingly frustrated Guildford side that in each case managed to hold off the sustained challenge from Epsom.

Guildford secured a 2-1 lead and in the fourth set Alex Chevau's powerful jump serve proved to much for the home side and Guildford reached 20-15 and ran out set winners

Champions !!!!!

Guildford Tsunami finished off the the 2003/2004 season as Champions of the Surrey League !!!

The team managed to top Division 1 by the narrowest of margins after being given a close run by Wimbledon. The Guildford side managed to secure victory on the last day of the season as they beat Wimbledon 3-1 at the American Community School in Cobham.

The arrival of the Championship at Guildford is an astonishing accomplishment. They faced relegation at the end of the  previous season but luckily were allowed to retain their 1st division place after the expulsion of Team Surrey Fire.

The core of the team consisted of Darren Heath, James Dickerson, Christophe Juvanon, Mike Richardson, Matt Neilson, Dan Hills and Borek Cernich but was also boosted by appearances from Mark Bunn, John Biddiscombe, Luke van Hengel and Giorgio Scatigna.
